Driver's Education

If you are a homeschool student interested in taking our in-person Drivers Education class or questions regarding scheduling Behind the Wheel hours with our instructors, please contact our office at 507-379-5318.

Once your student driver has a valid permit, our instructors recommend that they first gain driving experience with a parent or guardian before scheduling their training sessions. Students will be provided driving instructions and material that is tested during the student's road exam so that they know what to expect and can prepare. Scheduling the sessions 3-4 months prior to their birthdate/test date is beneficial as it will allow time to work on needed skills in between sessions. Once on the waitlist, an instructor will contact you to schedule three 2-hour practice sessions.

To get started, contact us at 507-379-5318 and provide us with the following information to be added to our wait list:

• First and last name
• Date of birth
• Permit number
• Best contact number for scheduling purposes

To schedule a RETAKE OR FIRST TIME KNOWLEDGE EXAM appointment:

• Go to drive.mn.gov.
• Select 'Schedule a written or road test', Driver Services and then Class D Knowledge Exam
• Follow the prompts.
• Make sure to bring in two of these accepted identifications for your student: SEE LIST HERE

To schedule a ROAD TEST appointment:

• Go to drive.mn.gov.
• Under 'Schedule a written or road test', select Driver Services and then Class D Skill Exam - First Time or Retest
• Follow the prompts.

Anyone who cannot keep an appointment should cancel their appointment online at drive.mn.gov with as much notice as possible so that appointment can be opened up for someone else.

Arrive prepared:

• Bring required documents. See here for Standard Identification Requirements.
• Bring check, cash or money order to pay the instruction permit fee and the retesting fee, if applicable.
  • There is a $10 test fee for third or subsequent knowledge tests after failing the first two.

If you are younger than 18:

• You must be at least 15 years old.
• Bring required documents. See here for Standard Identification Requirements.
• A parent, court-appointed guardian, county-appointed foster parent or the director of the transitional living program you reside in will need to come with to sign and approve your application.
• If completed, bring the supplemental parental curriculum completion certificate (Point of Impact completion certificate given in class).
